Length
5.5 km

An easy itinerary which passes through two interesting naturalistic areas: the 'Bosco de La Magia' and the 'Querciola'.

A short itinerary that joins the Medici stately home of ‘La Magia‘ to the ancient farmhouse called ‘Casa Zela‘ which now holds the area’s archive centre. On one side, the Villa was converted into a home with a so-called ‘Italian’ garden, a romantic garden, a wood and a hunting and fishing reserve and on the other side, a farmhouse built to resist floods and to save animals.

The itinerary

This walk goes along the cycle path that is next to the Martiri roundabout, it crosses Viale Europa and then continues along the Via Vecchia Fiorentina until it reaches a small bridge where the Fausto Coppi cycle path begins to run along its bank. When it comes to where it joins the Stella Stream, it turns right and then follows the Fausto Coppi cycle path. It is about 1.5 km long up to where it crosses the Via Montalbano. Here you must cross the carriageway and continue along the Fausto Coppi cycle path on the left bank of the Stella Stream. 1 km further on, you cross the Via Firenze ad you go on for another km along the bank until you reach the SS66 road. Thanks to a traffic light, you can safely cross the road here before proceeding along the Via Venezia beneath the riverbank. Following the track, you arrive at a bridge which enables you to pass over the Dogaia canal and to arrive at the Querciola area car park. Turning left, 250 metres on, you arrive at the Casa Zela farmyard.

The itinerary follows the cycle path for about 5.5 km, which would take you 20 minutes by bike or one
hour on foot.

Protected natural area Bosco de La Magia

The 'Bosco de La Magia' is a Nature Reserve of Local Interest which stands on the Montalbano slopes. The area can be visited thanks to many tracks and paths which do not create any altitude problems. By following the paths that cross over this area, you can admire an exceptional range of plant and animal species. Despite the fact that it is part of a very anthropized, or man-made, environment, this woody area in the plains has maintained its original characteristics over many centuries.

TAPPA 3

Protected natural area La Querciola

'La Querciola' is a Nature Reserve of Local Interest, standing 37 metres above sea level and is one of the lowest areas of the Pistoia plains. It lies between the banks of the Ombrone River and the Quardelli Canal which is an area often damaged by flooding. It is divided into two environmental types: the swamp or marsh area and the rural land area. Both are ideal habitats for a flourishing avifauna made up of migratory birds which enliven the whole area, as well as being home to reptiles and amphibians.

TAPPA 4

Zela’s house

Casa di Zela is a rural building whose central part was probably a tower-house constructed for defence purposes which then went on to become residential in the 16th century. Although there is no actual or absolute proof, the building most likely owes its name to 'Gli Zeli': a family of tenant farmers who once lived there. Nowadays, 'Casa di Zeli' is home to an ethnographic museum which gathers together proof of Quarrata's cultural roots and especially those of the farming world.
