A pleasant and relaxing loop trail in the Montalbano area, suitable for everyone, starting near Buriano.

The Springs Trail series offers a selection of hiking routes through the Montalbano hills, rediscovering historic springs and waterways that have played a vital role in the area’s history over the centuries.

The Sasso Regino Loop begins near the village of Buriano and leads into the woods, reaching the large rock known as Sasso Regino. Near this stone once flowed one of the area’s most important water sources. The route also touches two significant springs: Fonte della Bettina and Fonte di San Busceto.

The trail follows mainly paths and dirt roads, with only the final short stretch on a paved road. The route is not technically challenging, and the ascent is concentrated in the first part of the loop.

This trail was created by the Municipality of Quarrata in collaboration with the Ecoistituto delle Cerbaie, as part of a larger project that includes multiple loops across the areas of Quarrata and Carmignano.

Buriano

Buriano
TAPPA 1

Buriano

Buriano is a hamlet of the municipality of Quarrata, on the slopes of Montalbano. The village is divided into the villages of: Cerretino, Baugiano, Maestrino, Tacinaia, Mulina,Pollaiolo. In the latter there is the house of the father of the famous Florentine painters of the fifteenth century, Piero, and Antonio Benci, called the "Pollaiolo". Although its origins are ancient, and its existence attested in the Lombard era, Buriano had considerable importance in the Middle Ages. The church of San Michele Arcangelo, also known as the Monumental Complex of Buriano, built over a Longobard guard, houses, along the road that surrounds it, a way of the cross, consisting of fourteen paintings and an olive cross, from Jerusalem.

TAPPA 2

Sasso Regino

The Sasso Regino is a large limestone boulder that gives its name to the entire area. Before the Second World War, this area was devoid of vegetation, and from the Sasso one could enjoy a wide view over the plains of Pistoia, Prato, and Florence. There used to be the Fonte del Sasso Regino as well, a historic spring located beneath the boulder of the same name, around which some legends once circulated; unfortunately, it was buried by a landslide during the November 2023 flood.

San Busceto and Bettina springs

On the Montalbano mountain range, at an altitude of 335 meters, lies the Fonte di San Busceto, a highly productive spring that provides fresh water all year round. Next to the spring is a lovely meadow where visitors can stop and rest. Before reaching it, the route passes another spring, the Fonte della Bettina. Accessible via a short staircase, it is also equipped with a picnic table, making it a perfect spot for a break along the way.
