A symbol of resilience, the cork oak of the Quarrata plain preserves centuries of history and supports the region’s biodiversity.

In the heart of the Quarrata countryside stands a majestic cork oak, its roots deeply embedded in the history of the region. Located in an unattended nursery, this tree is a symbol of resilience, beauty, and identity: protecting it means preserving the memory, landscape, and future of the territory.

The cork oak, or Quercus suber, is an evergreen species typical of the Mediterranean. Its thick, spongy bark is a valuable source of cork, which can be harvested cyclically without harming the tree. These oaks can live for over 200 years and host numerous plant and animal species, contributing to biodiversity and playing a key role in combating desertification.

Cultivating and protecting them means investing in the future of the planet and safeguarding a unique heritage of nature and history.

Visiting the Cork Oak

The cork oak is located within an old private nursery, now abandoned, and the area is difficult to access. For safety reasons, independent visits are not recommended.

Legambiente Quarrata provides volunteers to accompany visitors, ensuring a controlled and respectful access to the site.
